Women's soccer honors sophomores for final home match
Comets lose 1-0 to North Iowa Area as community shows support of first-year program
The Western Iowa Tech women's soccer team gave it all they had during the final home match of 2023, a 1-0 loss to the North Iowa Area Trojans.
The Comets (3-12-2 overall) remain in sixth place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, one spot behind the Trojans.
"Today was our first sophomore night for our program; it was a night to remember," head coach Eddie Vongisprasom said. "The players played with a lot of energy and passion but one mental mistake was the deciding factor."
WIT honored its six sophomore players -- Zoe Wiggall, Brisa Rivera, Bailee Miller, Angela Delgada, Jai'elle Mosby and Marisela Cruz -- during a pre-game ceremony. Vongsiprasom thanked the WIT community and the teams fans -- many in pink for the match's Pink Out theme -- for supporting the program during it's launch year.
"I have always told the girls we have everything we need to succeed at WIT," Vongsiprasom said. "Today was a great example of that. We had admin, housing, student activities, marketing, registrar and athletic department all there, doing their part to make the night special. From making popcorn, being a ball person, to walking out with players so they don't walk out alone. It was a true example of community within a community."
The Comets generated three shots on goal, one each from Estefany Martinez, Amya Topete and Alexa Delatorre.
Wiggall was busy in net and, as usual, up to the task. The sophomore keeper stopped 15 of 16 shots on goal in her final match at Ruegger Field.
WIT's season finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Iowa Lakes in Spencer.
