Women's soccer draws at Southeastern, falls to Morningside JV
The score didn't reflect the level of play Monday evening, as the Western Iowa Tech women's soccer program rebounded from a 1-1 draw at Southeastern Community College on Saturday with a 3-0 loss at Morningside JV on Monday.
The difference was in the team's cohesiveness and the will to compete, according to head coach Eddie Vongsiprasom.
"The team played for each other again tonight," Vongsiprasom said following Monday's loss. "We didn't get the outcome but this is a game we can definitely (build) on. I'm super proud of the ladies."
The Comets (2-8-1) showed more fight against an experienced Mustangs squad two days after failing to get the upper hand on the Blackhawks in what was an up-for-grabs conference match.
Emma Jolly scored on a penalty kick in the 34th minute to give the Comets a 1-0 lead at the half. WIT's defense, led by sophomore captain Bailee Miller, played tough but the Blackhawks scored the tying goal in the 65th minute.
Comets keeper Zoe Wiggall stopped eight of the nine shots she faced as the Comets left West Burlington 1-1-1 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play.
A non-conference test against Morningside was what the Comets needed to recapture their form.
"We matched their energy tonight," Vongsiprasom said. "I feel we played very tough against a good program.
"It's nice to play against NAIA teams. Especially Morningside, they have a great program there. It's good for us to see the difference match-ups and speed of play at the NAIA level."
The Comets travel to Council Bluffs to play Iowa Western Community College, the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division 1, in another non-conference match at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. They host Marshalltown at 1 p.m. on Saturday in an ICCAC match held at South Sioux City High School.
