Western Iowa Tech's women's soccer team lost 3-0 in its program-opening match at Central Community College (Columbus, Nebraska) on Thursday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Wiggall stopped 12 of the Raiders' 15 shots and the Comets heart and passion was exemplified by its defensive effort in a match that will be remembered for its historical significance moreso than its result.
"The community's college soccer team has arrived," head coach Eddie Vongsiprasom said. "I wanted to make sure this team reflected Siouxland with local students and I couldn't be more proud."
Freshman captain Alexa Delatorre managed the game on both sides of the ball while every player on the roster "left everything on the field tonight," according to Vongsiprasom.
"I couldn't be more proud of our team tonight. Adjusting to college athletics isn't easy, yet these players wake up day in and day out and put in the work."
The long-time high school and club coach said his new college program has bought in to what it will take to establish a successful tradition in WIT athletics.
"These players have so much heart, drive and commitment to not only the game, but to one another and this community," Vongsiprasom said.
The Comets next play on Monday, August 21, at Dakota Wesleyan.
