Men's soccer grinds to second straight scoreless draw
Comets clinch winning record in first season
Western Iowa Tech men's soccer team played to a second straight scoreless tie Wednesday at Iowa Central.
The Comets (8-5-4) have nine clean sheets on the season, including all three matches in October.
"Compared to the 0-0 draw on Saturday at Hawkeye, which felt like a fair point, versus Iowa Central this one felt like a game we should have got all three points," head coach Alex Scheuler said. "I felt we were the better team on the ball for large spells, but we are still struggling to turn it into goal after goal, let a long a single goal."
The Comets placed seven shots on goal, led by two from freshman midfielder Gabriel Avellan. The Tritons had two.
It was the third straight clean sheet for goalkeeper Victor Goscinski, who earned ICCAC Player of the Week honors for the week of Ocotber 2-8. Goscinski has been the only sophomore in the lineup the last two matches.
"The team is so close to again breaking through," Scheuler said. "Despite the score, today was a more impressive and controlling performance (compared to the draw against Hawkeye)."
With just two matches remaining, the Comets have clinched a winning record in their inagural season. While Scheuler believes that the record could have been even better, he's optimistic about the position his program will be in entering year two.
"We've set a nice foundation to build upon this year for sure," Scheuler said. "As a coach I've never been as excited as I have been for an off-season as I am with this group. We should return more experience than most teams in the nation next year, so if we can put in good work in the offseason, we'll be in a good spot."
The Comets play their final home game of the season at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday against North Iowa Area Community College. The Comets (1-3-2) sit one spot ahead of the Trojans (1-4-1) in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference standings.
