Comets play Hawkeye to 0-0 draw
Victor Goscinski earns WIT's seventh shutout
For the seventh time this season, the Western Iowa Tech men's soccer team came away from a match with a clean sheet.
For the first time this season, that clean sheet didn't accompany a win.
The Comets (8-5-3) earned their first road shutout and first-ever 0-0 draw at Hawkeye Community College on Saturday in Waterloo.
"(We're) disappointed not to win the match, as we're in a situation where we'd like to get some more points in region play," head coach Alex Scheuler said. "However, looking at the positives in this situation I believe is important. Hawkeye is a difficult place to come away with any results, so happy to come away with something."
The RedTails put three shots on goal, all stopped by WIT keeper Victor Goscinski.
"(He) came up with 2-3 big saves to keep us in with a chance to win the game until the last minute," Scheuler said.
The Comets tallied two shots on goal.
The Comets carried a smaller travel roster but played 17 guys, only three of which played the full 90. Scheuler noted key contributions from Denis Silva Reis at center midfield and Joe Lewis at outside back. Starter Gabriel Avellan was kept off the stat sheet was key to the scoring chances the Comets were able to generate.
"Obviously as a coach and team after a 0-0 draw you will ask 'What if?' in regards to a couple of moments in front of goal," Scheuler said. "Last couple of weeks we've made massive strides as a team overall, understanding what it takes to compete in the ICCAC. Every day, every match and every opponent is a battle. Our young group has really matured over the last couple of weeks, and we are so close to breaking through with better results every time we stop on the pitch."
The Comets play another Iowa Community College Athletic Conference match Wednesday, October 12 at Iowa Central in Fort Dodge.
WIT (1-3-1 ICCAC) sits just behind the Tritons (1-2-2) in the conference standings.
