Comets 3-2 at ICCAC Summer Series
New-look squad grows together at pre-season jamboree
The Western Iowa Tech men's basketball team went 3-2 at the ICCAC Summer Series in Johnston, Iowa, over the weekend.
The early preseason tune-up allowed the second-year Comets squad to acclimate to new teammates, roles and expectations.
Six returners played with five incoming Comets under head coach Harvis "Coco" Cofield at Johnston High School.
"They were good tune-up and chemistry games to continue building on heading into the season," Cofield said.
The Comets went 2-1 on Saturday, earning wins over Henry Ford Community College (Dearborn, Michigan) of NJCAA Division II and Seward County CC (Liberal, Kansas) of Division I.
On Sunday the Comets opened with a morning victory over Division II team Bay CC (Escanaba, Michigan).
Their two losses can be chalked up to learning opportunities.
The Comets led late against Independence CC (Independence, Kansas) but poor shooting from the field and free-throw line cost them against the Division I opponent.
Macomb Community College (Warren, Michigan) dealt WIT its second loss in the final game of the weekend Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs, who finished seventh at the Division II national tournament last season, led by three with 6 minutes remaining, and pulled away as the Comets again struggled to find a rhythm down the stretch.
Seven teams competed on the men's side, while the Summer Series also held a six-team women's competition.
The Comets play scrimmages at The Arena in Sioux City on Tuesday night starting at 7:30 p.m.
