Davis named to ICCAC All-Region team
Sophomore averaged 16.2 points, 7.9 rebounds
Western Iowa Tech sophomore Latrel Davis was named to the ICCAC All-Region team, the conference announced Friday.
Davis, a 6-6 wing from Fargo, North Dakota, led the Comets with 16.2 points and 7.9 rebounds in 22 games this season. Both of those marks ranked fourth in the conference.
"He's one of those guys we really relied on each and every game," head coach Harvis 'CoCo' Cofield said. "When he played at a high level he was one of the top guys in the conference."
He played at a high level often.
Davis had a season-high of 35 points against North Iowa Area on January, and a 32-point performance against Ellsworth on February 14. He grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds at Des Moines Area on December 6.
"You probably didn't really notice this a lot, but at the end of the game you see on the stat line that he has like seven, eight rebounds, almost a double-double," Cofield said.
Davis led the Comets with five double-doubles and led the ICCAC with 6.9 defensive boards per game.
Davis also averaged one steal per game, tied for second on the team.
Though his size relative to his peers might suggest a certain style of play, the long, athletic Davis is comfortable with the ball in his hands, and one of the most dangerous players in the conference when gets a head of steam from the perimeter or in transition.
"(I told him) when you get the defensive rebound you can lead the break," Cofield said. "He runs like a deer, he runs the floor really well. He can handle the basketball well. And he didn't have a lot of turnovers. When he brought the ball up the floor we were OK with that, because he's always in attack mode.
"And when he's in attack mode, there's very few people who can stop him."
Davis finished his final season of junior college eligibility strong, averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds in his final three contests. Davis is currently weighing his transfer options, and the sought after wing plans to commit to a university for the fall.
"The ceiling for Latrel is very high. He has a great opportunity to go play at the next level," Cofield said. "We want to put him in the right situation where he's able to come in and play right away or redshirt and then play.
"He's a high-level player that can play at any level and have great performances and lead a team to a great season."
Davis was one of 24 players across the ICCAC's 10 teams voted in by the region's coaches. He was selected to the eight-player honorable mention team.
A first-year program without postseason eligiblity, the Comets placed only one player on the All-Region team.
Sophomore Jailyn Spears averaged 9.9 points per game, which was 33rd in the ICCAC. However, the 6-4 guard from Omaha finished the season with 12 straight games of 10 points or more, and averaged 17.5 ppg over that span.
"I thought he'd be one of those guys (to get consideration)," Cofield said. "Both guys, Latrel and Jay, they did a great job in the conference. They need to be recognized for that.
"Both of them will be able to go on and play at the next level."
