Spears named ICCAC Player of the Week
Efficient scoring and double-double in two-win week gives WIT second honoree
For the second time in their inaugural season, the Western Iowa Tech Comets can boast an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Sophomore Jailyn Spears won for his two-game performance during the week of February 19-25, in which the Comets went 2-0 at home. Sophomore Latrel Davis won for the week of January 8-14.
Spears averaged 19.5 points on 59.3% shooting last week. He averaged 6.5 rebounds and recorded a 23-point double-double in a 94-82 win against Northeast on Saturday, February 24.
WIT head coach Harvis "CoCo" Cofield said Spears has performed at his best when his team's needed him the most down the stretch this season.
"Jailyn Spears has really stepped up to the plate," Cofield said. "I think he's been playing at a high level, that's only going to help his case for playing at the next level."
Spears can score in a hurry, as evidenced by his 16 points in 16 minutes in a win against North Iowa Area on Wednesday, February 21. He shot 6-for-9 from the field, including 2 of 4 from deep, and he made both of his free throws.
Spears has scored at least 12 points in 11 straight games, and has shot 50.4% over that span.
The Comets play their season finale tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. at Iowa Central. A live stream will be available to watch at https://www.iccacsportsnetwork.com/IowaCentralTritons/.
