Davis named ICCAC Player of the Week for 35-point performance
Comets beat NIACC in overtime for first conference win
Western Iowa Tech sophomore Latrel Davis earned conference player of the week honors for his 35-point performance in a milestone win for the Comets.
Davis' 35 points was the highest output of a Comet player this season. He also had a team-best 12 rebounds and five assists in a 102-99 overtime win over the North Iowa Area Trojans in Mason City on Jan. 10. The win was WIT's first conference win of the season.
The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference announced the weekly awards on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Their release can be seen here.
"Latrel is a very talened player and capable of having these type of performances any given night," head coach Harvis 'Coco' Cofield said.
Davis leads the Comets (5-10 overall, 1-6 ICCAC) with 15.7 points per game on the season, and 18.6 ppg against ICCAC opponents. He's also the Comets' top rebounder with 7.5 a game overall, and eight per game in conference.
"I'm not surprised by Latrel's performance at all," Cofield said. "Latrel is a high level player and we will continue to keep encouraging him."
Davis shot 14-for-27 from the floor, including 4-for-9 on 3-pointers. He scored eight points in overtime.
Four other Comets scored in double figures against the Trojans. Ahmad Ingram had 13 while Jailyn Spears, Keishaun Pendleton and Zeb Svoboda all scored 12.
Pendleton tied Davis with the team-lead in assists with five.
Svoboda was 4-for-7 from deep, marking his third straight game making at least three 3-pointers.
Joshua Scott's only field goal of the game gave the Comets new life. The freshman forced overime when, down 87-85, he turned his defensive rebound with 17 seconds remaining into a coast-to-coast drive and finish on the left side of the rim.
The Comets host Iowa Central (4-11 overall, 1-5 ICCAC) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Robert E. Dunker Center. Admission is free.
