Fall eSports wrapup
The fall semester was a term of transition for Comets eSports. Coming off an impressive debut year, head coach Cale Conner and the Comets adapted to changes – some expected, some not – in leagues, player roles, rosters and more.
Super Smash Brothers Ultimate advanced the furthest of WIT's four games. The trio of Jayden Axtell, Brandon Rempfer and Keondre Williams competed in regionals on November 19.
While Valorant, Overwatch 2 and Rocket League (in its debut season) fell short of postseason play, they were not without their highlights.
Rachel Wynia and Joshua Reynolds made massive strides for the Valorant team this fall. Both entered the season ranked "iron," the lowest in the game, and both finished the season ranked "gold."
"I expect them to be in platinum within the next month or so," Conner said.
Overwatch was dealt a tough hand when unanticipated roster changes forced players to swap roles and do what was best for the team.
"After the old team captain left, T.J. (Tyler Diimig) stepped into the tank role and has been performing very well given the switch from support to tank," Conner said. "Caleb Baker has also done wonders swapping from support to damage."
This fall was WIT's first term with a Rocket League team. With a season of experience under their belts Conner believes the Comets will have more success as new players are added to the foundation built by Ethan Christensen, William Clarey, Noah List and Isaac Wagner. Ty Carr and Jakob Reinders look to join the team and make an impact next season.
"We are excited to get some practice in with them and see if we can make the most of next season with a more well-rounded team," Conner said.
